When it comes to figuring your total costs for going tankless there are two main expenses: the cost of the tankless water heater and the cost of installing the tankless water heater.
Many of our customers ask us what they can expect to spend installing their new tankless water heater and there is no straightforward answer as there are a number of issues to consider.
We have found that costs differ across the country regionally. Installing a tankless water heater in California, for example, will typically cost more than installing the same heater in Ohio. Other costs can differ based on whether you have chosen a Gas heater or an electric heater.
Gas Tankless Water Heater Installation Costs
Just like installing a traditional gas tank water heater, your installer will have to hook up the water, the gas and the venting. These are activities that they are comfortable with and the costs can often be easily predicted by your installer.
Connecting the water lines should be no problem. Cold water in and hot water out -- just like the traditional tank.
Sometimes the gas line requirements for a new gas tankless water heater may require a larger gas line than was required for the traditional tank water heater you are replacing. It is important to read the heater's Installation Manual to gain a full understanding of the Gas Line Sizing requirements as this may impact your installation costs.
Depending on the model of Gas tankless water heater you select, you may or may not be able to use your existing venting to vent your new water heater. It is extremely unlikely that you will be able to use your existing venting when installing the Bosch 2400E, for example. However, many of our customers find that they are able to use their existing venting when installing the Bosch 1600H heater through the roof.
Depending on your geographic location, you may be able to install an Outdoor Gas tankless water heater. This can dramtically reduce your installation costs as there is no venting required. However, some of these savings may be offset if your water and gas lines need to be run to a new location outdoors.
Electric Tankless Water Heater Installation Costs
Understanding the Amperage requirement for your new electric tankless water heater is the key to figuring your installation costs.
Electric tankless water heaters need cold and hot water hookups, just like a traditional electric tank heater. This should be straightforward.
Electric tankless water heaters use no electricity for most of the day. But, they draw a large amount of electricity when hot water is called for. As such, these heaters require more Amperage than the traditional electric tanks.
We have listed the Amperage requirements of each of our electric tankless heaters clearly on each product page. We even detail the number of breakers required for the whole house electric heaters. If you do not understand the Amperage requirements, please be sure to consult your installer prior to making a purchase.
If you have the necessary Amperage available your installer should have no problem hooking up the electrics. If you do not have the required electrical system to supply the power to the new heater, this can be an added expense.
It is the responsibility of our customers to ensure that they meet the electrical requirements of the electrical tankless water heater before making the purchase.
